Get better caller ID on your Android phone

Free app WhoAreYou not only shows you who's calling and where they're calling from, but also lets you block callers with just one tap.

Your mobile phone number isn't supposed to be used by telemarketers, but as we all know, it happens. What's more, if you have a number that used to belong to someone else, you might end up getting a bunch of calls you don't want. Heck, maybe you're getting harrassed by an ex-employee.
If you have an Android phone, help is at hand in the form of WhoAreYou, a free app that provides visual Caller ID and blocks unwanted calls.
When a call comes in, the app quickly and automatically polls a reverse-lookup database of over 200 million numbers. It then pops up a window with a name (if available), number, and even the city/state of the person who's calling. As always, you can answer the call or send it straight to voicemail, but WhoAreYou also gives you the option of "ditching" the call. That's the app's terminology for "blocking," and all future calls from that number will get immediately routed to voicemail. (The app maintains a blacklist of ditched callers, and you can easily "unditch" by tapping and holding the number.)

Free Reverse Cell Phone Lookup – The Truth About Mobile Phone Search

There are many situations where you may want or need to perform a cell phone lookup, and in most cases it will have nothing to do with spying on someone. It may be something as simple as trying to figure out whether a person still owns a phone number before calling him or her after several years, or looking up a number which you suspect might be erroneous to avoid making a call to the wrong person.
The problem is that when you set out to reverse search a cell number you will start hitting walls left and right, and the reason is that the so called free directories usually do not offer any real information about cell lines as they might with regards to landlines.
Indeed, mobile phone numbers and the respective information about the owners is stored in the carriers database which is privately held and not freely available to the public.

Tracing Callers Identities via Name and Phone Reverse Lookups, Blocked Numbers

When I get a phone call that I do not want to answer, I usually use one of the so called reverse phone lookup services which basically map a number to the caller's identity. Depending on the number that is calling you may need to use a slightly different approach. But basically it works like this. First I Google the number or use a free complaint board like 800Notes.com. The latter is a repository of messages that people who received calls from a particular number posted. Many of those numbers are toll free numbers which belong to companies such as debt collectors or telemarketeres. In many cases it would be a number that actually belongs to a legit organization such as your bank that is trying to reach you to verify certain information.

If the above method did not help me trace the number, I turn to public directories. Yellow Pages - this one contains lots of phone records for U.S. land line numbers. I like to use it whenever I need to check a business number. It provides a lot of useful information about the organization such as the name, address, diriving directions and nearby attractions. The major drawback is it does not contain the second most common type of the numbers - cellular.

Cell phone numbers aren't collected in a public database. Various carriers do not provide any directories out of privacy concerns. You can read more about these numbers elsewhere.

So, what do I do if it is a cell phone number that I need to trace. I usually use two resources - the reverse phone lookup for cell phone numbers and/or Number Guru App. Both of these work pretty well for many numbers and can provide the name or at least some information about the mobile number. You should be aware though that since no central mobile 411 directory exists, the number you are trying to track may have fallen through the cracks of these services and no name can be found.
