Tracing Callers Identities via Name and Phone Reverse Lookups, Blocked Numbers

When I get a phone call that I do not want to answer, I usually use one of the so called reverse phone lookup services which basically map a number to the caller's identity. Depending on the number that is calling you may need to use a slightly different approach. But basically it works like this. First I Google the number or use a free complaint board like 800Notes.com. The latter is a repository of messages that people who received calls from a particular number posted. Many of those numbers are toll free numbers which belong to companies such as debt collectors or telemarketeres. In many cases it would be a number that actually belongs to a legit organization such as your bank that is trying to reach you to verify certain information.

If the above method did not help me trace the number, I turn to public directories. Yellow Pages - this one contains lots of phone records for U.S. land line numbers. I like to use it whenever I need to check a business number. It provides a lot of useful information about the organization such as the name, address, diriving directions and nearby attractions. The major drawback is it does not contain the second most common type of the numbers - cellular.

Cell phone numbers aren't collected in a public database. Various carriers do not provide any directories out of privacy concerns. You can read more about these numbers elsewhere.

So, what do I do if it is a cell phone number that I need to trace. I usually use two resources - the reverse phone lookup for cell phone numbers and/or Number Guru App. Both of these work pretty well for many numbers and can provide the name or at least some information about the mobile number. You should be aware though that since no central mobile 411 directory exists, the number you are trying to track may have fallen through the cracks of these services and no name can be found.
